Fasting & Abstinence
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both fasting and abstinence. All Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.*
- Fasting: Catholics who are ages 18 to 59 are obliged to fast. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal.
- Abstinence: Catholics from age 14 onwards are bound to abstain from consuming meat.
*Exceptions include those who are physically and mentally ill (including chronic illnesses like diabetes) as well as pregnant and nursing women. The Church teaches that common sense should prevail so that a person does not further jeopardize their health because of the fasting requirements.
